Harvey Noir - Part 1 (interlude)

The rain finally stirred me awake from the peace of blackness. My first sign of becoming conscious was the sound - a bubbling brook of noise which eventually clarified into the murmurs of a crowd. I could hear some guy shouting and the crackle of splintering wood. But it was the strong wind and hard rain that finally stirred me awake enough to accept that I had lived.

No it was not just the sound of splintering wood, I recalled, but burning wood. I tried to open my eyes, but the pain that shot through the back of my head told me that was a bad idea and I abondened it. I started feeling around. I was most certainly outside the tavern now, by the obvious exposure to the elements. The pain that surrounded my body was being slowly countered by the cool rain falling down hard upon me. The surface below me was uneven, but seemed sturdy enough. Opening my eyes hadn't worked too well, but maybe I could at least stand.

I found a pretty solid foundation, I pushed myself upright. Vertigo immediately took over as I tried to orient myself. Straight, sideways, spinning around - the world was terribly distorted. I had to open my eyes or I would throw up, fall, or the way my luck had been going I'd do both in that unfortunate order.

My eyes shot open and I did my best to ignore the screaming hell that was my brain. Reaching out my hand to steady myself, I grabbed something sharp, but held on. My vision was spinning as well, but my first images were bad. I was not on the ground. Apparently I had been blown onto the roof of the town hall. Worse yet, it was the roof of the foyer - a very slanted roof to be exact. The roof was slick from the rain and wet ash, and five seconds too late it dawned on me that my footing was completely unstable. My hand slipped from the iron decorative work I had originally grabbed. My slick boots found no purchase and I flailed violently for anything to stop my fall.

Five seconds too late. Just my luck. I heard the crack of my already splitting head as it impacted with a window sill and the blackness welcomed me back.
